Althea Neale Gibson (born August 29, 1927 in Clarendon County, South Carolina) was a tennis player and later, golfer who was best known for being one of the first Black athletes to cross the racial/color line of international tennis and for becoming the first African American to win a Grand Slam title. Althea died on September 28, 2003 and her death was because of complications from a bladder and respiratory infection. She died at age 76.
