Andrés Escobar Saldarriaga (born March 13, 1967 in Medellín, Colombia) was a footballer who was best known for playing as defender for Atlético Nacional, BSC Young Boys, and the Colombia national soccer team. He also was nicknamed “The Gentleman” for his clean style of play and calmness on the pitch. Andrés died on July 2, 1994 and his death was reportedly because three men appeared while he was at a parking lot in his car and two of the men pulled out their handguns and shot Andrés due to him kicking the ball in his own goal which ended 2-1 during the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He died at the tender age of 27.
