Barbara Charline Jordan (born February 21, 1936 in Houston, Texas) was a lawyer, academic, and politician who was best known for being the first African American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction and the first Southern African-American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives. Barbara died on January 17, 1996 and her death was because of complications from pneumonia. She died quite soon at age 59.
