John Carroll O’Connor (born August 2, 1924 in The Bronx, New York) was a TV actor, TV producer, and TV director who was best known for his role as Archie Bunker in the 1971-1979 American network sitcom, “All in the Family” including it’s spinoff, “Archie Bunker’s Place”. He was also known for his role as Police Chief Bill Gillespie on the drama series, “In the Heat of the Night.” Carroll died on June 21, 2001 and his death was because of a heart attack brought on by complications from diabetes. He died at age 76.
