Christiaan Neethling Barnard (born November 8, 1922 in Beaufort West, Cape Province) was a physician who was best known for being a cardiac surgeon who performed the world’s first human-to-human heart transplant operation. Christiaan died on September 2, 2001 and his death was reportedly because of an asthma attack. He died at age 78.
