Hafez al-Assad (born October 6, 1930 in Al Qardahah, Syria) was a military personnel and later, politician who was best known for serving as the President of Syria in 1971 until his death in 2000. He was the Prime Minister of Syria from 1970 to 1971. Hafez died on June 10, 2000 and his death was because of heart attack. He died quite young at age 69.
