James Wheldon Johnson (born June 17, 1871 in Jacksonville, Florida) was a writer and activist who was best known for being a key figure of the Harlem Renaissance for writing the lyrics for “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which was known as the Black National Anthem. James died on June 26, 1938 and his death was reportedly because of the car that he was in was hit by a train. He died nine days after his 67th birthday.
