John Allyn McAlpin Berryman (born October 25, 1914 in McAlester, Oklahoma) was a poet and scholar who was best known for being a major figure in the second half of the 20th century and for being in the confessional school of poetry, including his 1964 poem, “77 Dream Songs.” John died on January 7, 1972 and his death was reportedly because of suicide by jumping off the Washington Avenue Bridge. He died too soon at age 57.
