Laurance Spelman Rockefeller (born May 26, 1910 in New York City, New York) was a businessperson and philanthropist who was best known for his involvement in wilderness preservation, ecology and the protection of wildlife. Laurance died on July 11, 2004 and his death was reportedly because of pulmonary fibrosis. He died at age 94.

"Laurance Rockefeller led a tumultuous and high-stakes life. He was the grandson of John D. Rockefeller and sister of Oil magnate Nelson Rockefeller. Laurance became a wealthy businessman and politico after succeeding his father in the RockefellerPF company. He married his first wife, Betty Macdonald, in 1944 and had two children. When the Cold War started, he became a leading opponent of the United States’s involvement in the warfare. Laurance was diagnosed with a recurrence of leukemia in early 1991 and resigned from hischairmanship of the Rockefeller Foundation in response. He died in Washington, D.C., on December 15, 1991, at the age of 83. (V)"
