Karol Józef Wojtyła (born May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland) was an academic who was best known as the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State starting in 1978 until 2005. Pope John died on April 2, 2005 and his death was because of septic shock. He died at age 84.
