He attended a Montmartre school where he learned to ride a bike and play football before going on to college. After working as a waiter, scheduled train rides, and waiting tables, he became a political activist and journalist. He unsuccessfully ran for office in the late 1960s, but in 1976, he was elected president of Cuba through a merger of the two main political parties. After four years in office, his charisma and stance on socialism caused a surge in popular support. In 1980, he was elected president for a second term. After a period of peaceful rule, unrest began to grow in 1992. On November 8, solidifying his hold on power, Raúl Castro announced that he was stepping down as president, effective December 15. (V)"
