Ruth Marianna Handler (born November 4, 1916 in Denver, Colorado) was a businessperson and inventor who was best known for inventing the Barbie doll in 1959 and served as the first president of toy company that made the dolls, Mattel, Inc. Ruth died on April 27, 2002 and her death was because of complications of colon surgery. She died at age 85.
