Shelby Dade Foote Jr. (born November 17, 1916 in Greenville, Mississippi) was a writer and journalist who was best known for his 1958 to 1974 three-volume history books, “The Civil War: A Narrative.” Shelby died on June 27, 2005 and his death was reportedly because of a pulmonary embolism. He died at age 88.
