Wilbert Vere Awdry OBE (born Ampfield, England) was an author and clergy who was best known for being the creator of the fictional character "Thomas the Tank Engine" and several other characters who appeared in the Railway Series. Wilbert died on March 21, 1997 and his death was possibly because of natural causes. He died peacefully at age 85.
