Bass Reeves (born July 1, 1838 in Crawford County, Arkansas) was a military personnel who was noted as the first black deputy U.S. marshal west of the Mississippi River. His career was in Arkansas and the Oklahoma Territory. Bass died on January 12, 1910 and his death was because of kidney failure caused by nephritis. He died at age 71.
